USAA Defensive Driving Discount in Texas: What They Actually Publish
USAA does not apply this one automatically. If you finish the course and never call, nothing happens.
Texas does not require any insurer to give a defensive-driving discount. The Legislature moved auto insurance to file-and-use rating in 2003 and the old mandate died with the benchmark system in 2004, so every term below is USAA's own choice — the full legal picture is here.

What to ask USAA before you enroll
- "Do I qualify — at my age, on this policy?" USAA publishes no age condition, but that does not mean none is applied. Ask directly.
- "How much, and on which coverages?" Several insurers apply the discount to liability and collision only, not the whole premium — which roughly halves what a headline percentage is worth.
- "Does a course taken for ticket dismissal count?" Some insurers require it to be voluntary and do not say so publicly.
- "How long does it last, and what do you need from me?" Three years is typical. Get the submission method in writing so the certificate is not sitting in an inbox nobody reads.

Does the course have to be TDLR-approved?
For Texas, expect yes. The standard six-hour driving safety course is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and a provider must hold a TDLR license number to issue a valid certificate. How long does a defensive driving discount usually last?
Around three years is the common industry pattern, after which insurers typically want a fresh course. USAA does not publish a duration, so treat three years as a rule of thumb and confirm the real number with USAA — it determines whether the course is worth retaking.
