GEICO Defensive Driving Discount in Texas: What They Actually Publish

GEICO publishes the strictest conditions of any major Texas insurer — and the one most likely to catch out a driver with a ticket.

Texas does not require any insurer to give a defensive-driving discount. The Legislature moved auto insurance to file-and-use rating in 2003 and the old mandate died with the benchmark system in 2004, so every term below is GEICO's own choice — the full legal picture is here.

What GEICO publishes

"To qualify for the discount, you must be at least 50 years of age and have completed the course on a voluntary basis (not as a result of an order of a court or other governmental entity)."

If you have a ticket, read this part twice

GEICO requires the course to be taken "on a voluntary basis (not as a result of an order of a court or other governmental entity)." A course you take because a court granted your dismissal request is exactly what that sentence excludes.

This is worth being blunt about, because the whole internet tells you the same course does double duty. At GEICO it does not. That does not make the course a bad idea — dismissal is worth far more than the discount. A conviction sits on your record and rates your premium for roughly three years; a few percent off is not in the same league as never being surcharged at all. Take the course, dismiss the ticket, and treat the discount as unavailable here rather than being surprised later.

What to ask GEICO before you enroll

  1. "Do I qualify — at my age, on this policy?" GEICO publishes a condition of at least 50 years old, so this is the question that decides everything else.
  2. "How much, and on which coverages?" Several insurers apply the discount to liability and collision only, not the whole premium — which roughly halves what a headline percentage is worth.
  3. "Does a course taken for ticket dismissal count?" GEICO has already answered this in print: no.
  4. "How long does it last, and what do you need from me?" Three years is typical. Get the submission method in writing so the certificate is not sitting in an inbox nobody reads.

Frequently asked questions

Does GEICO give a discount for defensive driving in Texas?

GEICO publishes this: "To qualify for the discount, you must be at least 50 years of age and have completed the course on a voluntary basis (not as a result of an order of a court or other governmental entity)." Texas does not require any insurer to offer this discount, so whether you get one — and how much — is GEICO's decision, not the state's. Confirm it on your own policy before you enroll.

Is there an age requirement for the GEICO discount?

Yes — GEICO states it as: at least 50 years old. This is the condition drivers are most often caught by, because almost nothing else written about defensive-driving discounts mentions it. If you are under that age, ask whether any other course-based discount applies to you before spending six hours.

Will a course I took to dismiss a ticket also earn the GEICO discount?

No — and GEICO is explicit about it. The published condition requires the course to be completed "on a voluntary basis (not as a result of an order of a court or other governmental entity)." A course you took because a court granted your dismissal request is court-ordered. It still dismisses your ticket, which is the larger financial win; it just will not also buy you this discount.

How do I send my certificate to GEICO?

Log in to your policy on geico.com and upload the completion certificate; some course providers report completions to GEICO directly. Your certificate has a court copy and an insurance copy; the insurance copy is the one that goes to the insurer.

Does the course have to be TDLR-approved?

For Texas, expect yes. The standard six-hour driving safety course is regulated by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and a provider must hold a TDLR license number to issue a valid certificate. You can check any provider's license in our provider directory. Road Ready Safety is CP#1234.

How long does a defensive driving discount usually last?

Around three years is the common industry pattern, after which insurers typically want a fresh course. treat three years as a rule of thumb and confirm the real number with GEICO — it determines whether the course is worth retaking.

The same six hours, either way

Texas regulates the course, not the price: every TDLR-approved provider teaches the same six hours, and the certificate is the same document. Ours is $28 all-in, online, with both the court copy and the insurance copy in the free instant download.

Call GEICO first. We would rather you spend five minutes on the phone than six hours on a maybe.
