How Much Does a Texas Traffic Ticket Actually Cost?

The number on the citation is the small part. Texas caps the fine at $200 (Transp. Code §542.401), then adds roughly $126 in state-mandated court costs on a conviction — and then your insurer rates the conviction for about three years, which is usually the largest number of the three and the only one nobody quotes you.

Pick your violation, put in your own premium, and see the two paths side by side.

Estimates, not quotes. Texas has no statewide fine schedule — every municipal and justice court sets its own amounts inside the statutory cap — and no insurer publishes its surcharge. The arithmetic uses the figures you entered.

Why the fine is the least of it

A Texas conviction does not add points — the points system was repealed in 2019 — but it does go on your driving record, and that is what insurers rate. On a $1,800–$2,400 premium, a 10–15% surcharge is roughly $540–$1,080 over three years. That is the number the $28 course is really competing with, not the fine.

And the third path is worse than both. Ignoring the ticket adds a failure-to-appear charge, a warrant, a $50 fee and an OmniBase hold on your licence renewal — and you still end up convicted.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a speeding ticket in Texas?

The fine itself is capped at $200 by statute (Transp. Code §542.401) and set by each court, commonly landing between about $97 and $130 for low-speed offenses and climbing toward the cap above 20 over. Court costs are then added on top — roughly $126 in state-mandated charges on a conviction — which is why real totals usually run $200–$300 before insurance.

Why is there no exact price for my ticket?

Because Texas does not have a statewide fine schedule. Each municipal and justice court sets its own amounts inside the statutory cap, so a stop-sign ticket genuinely costs different amounts in two neighboring cities. Your citation or your court's website has your number; this tool shows the shape of the decision, not a quote.

Is the insurance increase really the bigger number?

For most drivers, yes — and it is the part people leave out. A conviction stays on your record and is rated for about three years. On a $1,800–$2,400 annual premium, even a 10–15% surcharge is several hundred dollars a year. The fine is a one-time cost; the conviction is a recurring one.

What does dismissal cost instead?

About $184 all-in at a typical court: roughly $144 in court costs to be granted the course, $28 for our course, and $12 to DPS for the Type 3A driving record. Court costs vary — we have seen $109, $134, $139 and $169 — so use your court's real figure.

What if I just ignore the ticket?

It becomes the most expensive option available. Missing your answer date can add a failure-to-appear charge, a warrant, an OmniBase hold that blocks your licence renewal, and a $50 fee on top of everything you already owed. The conviction still happens.

Does paying the ticket online end it?

It ends the court case and starts the expensive part. Paying is a plea of guilty or no contest, which is a conviction — it goes on your driving record where your insurer finds it at renewal. It is the single most common and most costly mistake with a Texas ticket.

The cheaper path, in one evening

If your ticket is eligible, dismissal leaves nothing on your record for any insurer to rate — now or at your next renewal with a different company. Our course is $28 all-in, with the certificate downloadable the moment you finish.
