Texas Defensive Driving Deadline Calculator
Two deadlines decide whether this works, and they are not the same date. First, the answer date printed on your citation — the day by which the court must hear from you. Second, the 90 days from the court granting your request in which the certificate has to arrive. Miss the first and you may lose the option entirely; miss the second and the charge comes back.

Sequence matters more than speed. Courts routinely reject certificates dated before the order granting the course, so finishing early is not a shortcut — it is a rejection.
- Request by the answer date. Plea, request, licence copy, insurance, and the court's fee. What to send, exactly.
- Wait for the order. It carries your real deadline. Nothing before this counts.
- Take the course and order your Type 3A record. Six hours, and $12 from DPS.
- Submit both, with a week to spare. New certificates can take up to five days to appear in TDLR's validation system.

How do I know my answer date?
It's printed on the citation itself — usually labeled the appearance date, answer date, or 'on or before' date. It is not something you calculate, and it is not the same at every court. If the ticket is lost, the court clerk can tell you, and our court directory has the phone number for all 1,742 Texas courts.
What actually happens on the answer date?
Nothing automatic and nothing good. It's the deadline to respond to the charge — by requesting defensive driving, entering a plea, or appearing. Miss it and the court can add a failure-to-appear charge, issue a warrant, and report you to OmniBase, which blocks your driver licence renewal.
Is the 90-day deadline the same everywhere?
Ninety days from the court granting your request is the statutory maximum under Code of Criminal Procedure chapter 45A, and most courts use exactly that. Some grant less. The number that governs you is the one on the order the court sends back — this tool defaults to 90 days, and you can change it to match your order.
Why does the tool tell me to finish a week early?
Because TDLR notes a new certificate can take up to five days to appear in its validation system, and courts that verify certificates electronically cannot see yours until it does. Add mail time on top if your court doesn't take email or online submission. Finishing on day 89 is how people miss a 90-day deadline.
What if my answer date has already passed?
Call the clerk today, before doing anything else. A judge has discretion to accept a late request any time before final disposition, and many will — but nobody can tell you whether yours will except that court. If a warrant or OmniBase hold has already issued, deal with that first.
Does this tool send my information anywhere?
The dates are calculated in your browser and are never transmitted. If you choose to enter an email for a reminder, that email address is sent to our reminder list and nothing else — no dates, no citation details.
