Texas defensive driving course›Texas DSC statistics›Every way to dismiss a ticket
Every way to get a Texas ticket dismissed, and the one you can count on
There are four: a driving safety course, deferred disposition, a compliance fix (like proving you had insurance), or the prosecutor dropping it. Only the first three are yours to start.
Yet 4 in 10 Texas drivers skip all of them and just pay, which puts the ticket on their record. Here's which path fits your ticket, and what 3.9 million court cases say about each.

Which dismissal path fits your ticket?
Pick what you were cited for. Each path has its own door, and using the wrong one costs you the right one.
Path 1: the course
The driving safety course is your best bet.
Most moving violations qualify. Ask your court by your answer date, take the 6-hour course, and the ticket is dismissed and kept off your record.
Path 2: deferred
Ask about deferred disposition.
The course is out, but deferred usually isn’t. You’ll serve a probation period of up to 180 days; stay clean and the charge is dismissed.
Path 3: compliance
Had coverage that day? Show proof.
If your policy was valid when you were cited, proof of it can get the charge dismissed. No coverage then? Ask the court about your other options.
Path 3: compliance
Fix it, then show the court.
Many of these are dismissed once you renew and bring proof, sometimes with a small fee. Move fast: courts set short windows.
Different rules
The course and deferred are both off the table.
Texas law excludes these from both driver-started paths. Call the court about what’s left, and consider a traffic lawyer before you plead.
How do Texas traffic tickets actually end?
Of 3,947,968 traffic cases Texas courts closed in FY2024, the biggest single outcome was a driver who paid. The paths you control (blue) added up to about 27.6%.
Notice the biggest dismissal bar is the prosecutor's. Tempting to wait for that. Here's why you shouldn't.
The four paths, side by side
So for an everyday moving violation it comes down to two: the course or deferred. One question decides it.
Course or deferred disposition: which should you pick?
If you qualify for the course, take it. Deferred is the backup for when you don't.

I was going 25+ over, or I have a CDL. What now?
The course is off the table. At 25+ over, ask about deferred disposition. With a CDL, or a work-zone ticket with workers present, deferred is out too, so talk to the court or a lawyer. Your options
