How Idaho's point system works: the suspension thresholds and the three-point reduction

Idaho suspends a license at 12 points in 12 months. The suspension gets longer at 18 and 24. An approved course removes three points once every three years. The whole system in one place.

Short answer: Idaho assigns one to four points to most moving violations. Twelve or more points within twelve months triggers a suspension. ITD's published schedule is 30 days for 12 to 17 points, 60 days for 18 to 23, and 90 days for 24 or more. An approved six-hour defensive driving course removes three points, once every three years, after any citation is paid.

How points accumulate

Most moving violations carry one to four points, with speeding scaled by how far over the limit you were. Points count toward the suspension threshold for twelve months from the date of the violation. The conviction stays on your record longer than the points count.

The suspension schedule

Points in 12 months Suspension
12 to 17 30 days
18 to 23 60 days
24 or more 90 days

ITD sends notice before imposing the suspension. Confirm your current total against your own record before relying on any table, including this one.

The three-point reduction

IDAPA 39.02.71 lets ITD remove three points when you complete an approved course. Once every three years, only after any outstanding citation is paid, and it does not touch the conviction itself. Our course is six hours and $24.99. We wrote up the process in how to get three points removed.

When the course helps most

At nine to eleven points, three points off is the difference between a warning and a 30-day suspension the next time you are cited. At twelve or more, the course does not shorten a suspension already imposed. Take it early.

What to do today

  1. Request your driving record from ITD and count the points inside the last twelve months.
  2. Pay any open citation.
  3. Take an approved course and email ITD the certificate. Three points off, once every three years.
