Short answer
Order a limited North Dakota driving record from NDDOT's online Record Request System for $3. It shows your current point total, and you print it or email it to yourself on the spot. How do I get my North Dakota driving record online?
Use NDDOT's Drivers License Record Request System. You enter your name, date of birth and driver ID, pay $3 by card, and the record appears on screen. Print it or send it to an email address before you close the window. NDDOT says that once you close the application you can't reprint or re-email it.
What you get online is the limited record.
How do I get the complete record?
Fill out form SFN 51386, Request for Driver Abstract, and mail it with the $3 fee to:
Driver License Division 608 E. Boulevard Ave Bismarck, ND 58505-0750
NDDOT says the complete record "can only be obtained by submitting SFN 51386."
What's the difference between the two?
| Limited record | Complete record | |
|---|---|---|
| How to get it | Online | By mail, SFN 51386 |
| Cost | $3 | $3 |
| Current point total | Yes | Yes |
| Violations more than 3 years old | No | Yes |
| Crash information | No | Yes |
| Date your license was first issued | No | Yes |
For counting points, the limited record is enough. An employer or a court that wants your full history will want the complete one.
How do I read the points on it?
- Your point total. Twelve suspends your license. For a driver under 18, six cancels it.
- The date your last points were entered. One point comes off for every three months after that date without new points.
- Whether a recent ticket has posted yet. Points are entered when NDDOT receives the report from the court.
What each violation is worth is in North Dakota traffic violations: fines and points.
I sent in a course certificate. When should I check?
Give NDDOT a couple of weeks, then order a limited record. Your total should be 3 lower. If it isn't, call the Driver License Division at 701-328-2604. The office answers Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 to 3.
When is the best time to take the course?
When the reduction will do the most. If you have 3 or more points, the course takes off 3. If you have 1 or 2, waiting three to six months clears them for free. If you're at 9 or more, take it now. How the course takes 3 points off.
This guide is part of North Dakota driver's license points: the point system and how to remove points. If you need the points off, the 4-hour online course is 4 hours online for $24.99.
