How many points and how much is each violation?
Points come from NDCC 39-06.1-10. Fees come from NDCC 39-06.1-06, which sets the amount for a noncriminal ticket you pay without going to trial. The bond on your citation is the same amount. The last column shows whether you can elect a course in lieu of points, which is limited to noncriminal violations worth 5 points or fewer.

"See citation" means 39-06.1-06 doesn't name a fee for that violation; the amount on your ticket controls. Careless driving has a wrinkle: 39-06.1-06(2)(i) says $30, while the careless driving section itself names a different figure. Careless driving tickets covers the conflict. A city ordinance ticket can also carry a different amount than the state fee.
How are speeding points and fees figured?
| Limit | Points | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 65 or less | 0 up to 10 over, then 1 to 15 | $3 per mph over, $20 minimum |
| Above 65 | 0 up to 5 over, then 1 to 15 | $5 per mph over, $20 minimum |
| School zone | Same as above | $40 for 1 to 10 over, then $1 per mph |
| Work zone, workers present | Same as above | $150 for 1 to 10 over, then $2 per mph |
Add $20 at 16 mph or more over. On a 65-or-less road you can elect the course up to 25 over (5 points). Above 65, up to 20 over. Speeding ticket points has the full band table, and speeding ticket cost works out the dollars.
Which violations carry no points?
- Driving without a license: 0 points, but a $150 fee under 39-06.1-06(9)
- Overtime and double parking under city ordinances
- Speeding up to 10 over where the limit is 65 or less, and up to 5 over where it's higher
NDDOT's points page says that for violations not on the schedule, "no points are assigned." Tickets with no points lists more.
Which points can a course keep off?
Those from a noncriminal violation worth 5 points or fewer, if you tell the court you're electing the course at the time you post bond, under NDCC 39-06.1-10.1. Offenses worth 6 or more are excluded. So are those listed in 39-06.1-05, including reckless driving, leaving the scene and driving under suspension. You still pay the fee in the table. Don't pay online if you want this; the election goes to the clerk in writing. How the election works.
Which points can a course take off afterward?
Any of them. The 3-point reduction under 39-06.1-13 comes off your total regardless of which violation put the points there. It's limited to once in 12 months and 9 points in three years, and it's lost if you made an in-lieu election. Our 4-hour course is $24.99.
What happens at 12 points?
NDDOT suspends your license for 7 days for each point over 11. Drivers under 18 lose their license at 6. The points hub has the suspension table and the removal rules.

Quick answers
How many points is careless driving in North Dakota?
Six points, under NDCC 39-06.1-10. Because it is worth more than 5 points, the in-lieu election is not available for it.
How much is a stop sign ticket in North Dakota?
$40 and 2 points. Running a red light is $20 and 2 points, or $50 if it involves failing to yield to a pedestrian. Both qualify for the in-lieu election.
How many points is reckless driving in North Dakota?
Eight points. Aggravated reckless driving is 12. Both are criminal offenses, so there's no statutory fee and no in-lieu election; the court sets the penalty.
How many points is driving without insurance in North Dakota?
Six points. It is 12 points for a second violation within 18 months, and 14 points if the violation was found in the investigation of a crash in which the driver is the owner. The fee is $150 for a first violation and $300 for a second within three years.
Does the in-lieu election lower the fee?
No. The bond is forfeited even when you elect the course, so you pay the fee in the table and the course fee. What the election saves is the points.
