What's in Texas adult drivers ed, and what it doesn't do

Texas adult drivers ed is 9 modules over six hours, ending in a 40-question final exam. The state sets the topics, so every approved provider teaches the same list. What a provider does control, and which modules hold the material for the DPS knowledge exam, is below.

A guide from Texas 6-hour adult drivers ed online by Road Ready Safety.

What are the nine modules?

Module 1 introduces the course and Module 9 is the final exam. The seven between cover your license, right-of-way, signs and signals, traffic flow, alcohol and drugs, other road users, and managing risk, in that order.

Module 1

Course Introduction

How the course works and what you get at the end.

Module 2

Your License to Drive

License types, what the DPS wants from you, and the documents to bring.

Module 3

Right-of-Way

Who goes first at intersections, four-way stops, and roundabouts.

Module 4

Traffic Control Devices

Signs, signals, and road markings — the material the sign half of your exam comes from.

Module 5

Controlling Traffic Flow

Speed, lane changes, passing, merging, turning, and parking.

Module 6

Alcohol and Other Drugs

Texas DWI law, what refusing a test costs you, and how prescriptions fit in.

Module 7

Cooperating with Other Roadway Users

Motorcycles, trucks, cyclists, pedestrians, school buses, and traffic stops.

Module 8

Managing Risk

Distraction, fatigue, bad weather, night driving, and what to do in a crash.

Module 9

Final Assessment

The final exam: 20 highway signs, 20 traffic laws.

Which modules cover the DPS knowledge exam material?

Module 4, Traffic Control Devices, carries the signs, and the traffic law runs through Modules 2, 3 and 5. The final exam tests both halves, 20 sign questions and 20 law questions, and passing it satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam.

You need 70% on each half, with 3 attempts. How the final exam works. The rest of the DPS process, including the road test, stays where it is; here is what the course does not do.

How is the course put together?

As 95 timed sections, 7 knowledge checks, 2 videos, 2 breaks and a two-part final exam.

  • 95 sections across the 9 modules, each with a minimum time before you can advance.
  • 7 knowledge checks, one closing each module from 2 through 8.
  • 2 videos in Module 7, each followed by questions on what you just watched.
  • 2 built-in breaks of fifteen minutes.
  • A two-part final examination of 40 questions.

The section timers are what make it six hours; how long the course takes shows where the minutes go.

Is the course the same at every provider?

The topics are, because Texas writes the syllabus. The state publishes a Program of Organized Instruction for the adult six-hour course, adopted into the administrative code. It enumerates every required topic, down to lettered sub-requirements, and a provider has to map its curriculum to all of them to be approved. Nobody can drop the boring parts or add a shortcut.

What a provider does control is whether the material reads like it was written for a person. That is the thing to compare, so look at a sample of the writing before you pay.

What doesn’t the course do?

It doesn’t give you a license, teach you to drive, replace the road test or the ITAD video, or shorten any DPS queue.

  • It is not a driver license. It produces a certificate. DPS issues licenses, and Texas rules forbid a provider from promising you one.
  • It does not teach you to drive. If you have never been behind a wheel, budget for lessons separately.
  • It does not replace the driving test. It satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam, and nothing more. The road test remains, with a median 20-day wait when we last read the DPS report. What the driving test checks.
  • It does not replace the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. DPS says so itself. You do both.
  • It does not shorten any queue. Finishing in one evening does not move your appointment. If the wait is your problem, a DPS-authorized driving school may have a shorter one.

Common questions

What is covered in Texas adult drivers ed?

Nine modules set by the state: Course Introduction, Your License to Drive, Right-of-Way, Traffic Control Devices, Controlling Traffic Flow, Alcohol and Other Drugs, Cooperating with Other Roadway Users, Managing Risk, Final Assessment. The content is fixed by the Texas Program of Organized Instruction, so every approved provider teaches the same topics; what differs is how well.

How many modules is the Texas adult course?

9 modules across 95 sections, with 7 knowledge checks and a two-part final examination.

Is the course the same at every provider?

The required topics are, because Texas prescribes them. Providers cannot add or remove subjects. The writing, the examples, the graphics and the examination are the provider’s own.

Do I have to do it in order?

Yes. The course runs in sequence and you cannot skip ahead of a section before its timer has run. You can stop and come back as often as you like.

Which module has the material for the DPS exam?

Module 4, Traffic Control Devices, carries the signs material, and the traffic law content runs through Modules 2, 3 and 5. The final examination draws on both because it satisfies the highway sign and traffic law portions of the DPS knowledge exam.

Does adult drivers ed give me a Texas driver license?

No, and no provider may promise that. The course produces a certificate. DPS issues licenses, after its own tests and checks.

Does the course teach me to drive?

No. It is classroom instruction: law, signs, right-of-way and risk. Learning to operate a car happens behind the wheel, with a driving school or supervised practice.
