How to Request DSC Approval
To Request Approval — Submit These
- •Valid Texas driver's license (active-duty U.S. military with out-of-state licenses should contact the court)
- •Proof of insurance listing you as a driver
After Completing the Course — Submit These
- •Certified driving record (Type 3A) from Texas DPS after course completion
Important Deadlines & Local Rules
- •Request deadline: Request must be made on or before the twentieth (20th) day following the date of the citation or the scheduled court hearing.
- •Completion window: Typically 90 days from court approval (standard Texas practice — confirm with court).
- •Court approval is required BEFORE taking any defensive driving course; requests accepted in person or by mail only.
- •Once approved, you may take any TEA-approved defensive driving course, including online courses.
- •Verbatim deadline rule: request must be made 'on or before the twentieth (20) day following the date of the citation or the scheduled court hearing.'
- •Ineligible if: completed a DSC in the past 12 months, hold a CDL, cited for speeding 25+ mph over the limit, passing a stopped school bus, or a construction/work zone violation with workers present.
