How to Request DSC Approval
To Request Approval — Submit These
- •Valid Texas driver's license
- •Proof of financial responsibility (auto insurance)
- •Completed plea/options form requesting the defensive driving course
- •Payment of $135.00 court costs
After Completing the Course — Submit These
- •DSC Certificate of Completion (signed)
- •Certified Type 3A Driving Record from Texas DPS
Important Deadlines & Local Rules
- •Request deadline: Request must be made on or before your court appearance date; permission must be granted by the judge BEFORE you complete the course
- •Completion window: Typically 90 days from court approval (standard Texas practice — confirm with court).
- •Judge's permission is required before completing a defensive driving course.
- •Eligibility: valid Texas driver's license, an eligible offense, and no DSC completed within the last 12 months.
- •NOT eligible for DSC or deferred disposition if: speeding 25+ mph over the limit, passing a school bus, hit and run, or a work zone violation while workers are present.
- •Deferred disposition is also available (30–180 days); drivers under 25 must complete a DSC as part of deferred disposition.
