New York Defensive Driving (IPIRP) — Course Requirements

Last updated: Jun 13, 2026

Who This Course Is For

NY licensed drivers seeking up to a 4-point reduction and/or a 10% insurance discount.

Requirements & Deadlines

  • DMV-approved, online (I-PIRP) or classroom
  • 320 minutes of instruction (about 5.5 hours); online is self-paced but must be finished within 30 days of registration
  • Point reduction: up to 4 points, once every 18 months (subtracted for suspension purposes only – the points and violation stay on your record)
  • Insurance discount: 10% off the base rate of liability and collision premiums each year for 3 years; retake every 36 months to keep it

Submission Details

Certificate Submission: Provider reports your point reduction to the NY DMV electronically; you give the completion certificate to your auto insurer

Reporting Method: DMV is notified of the point reduction within about 10 weeks; the insurance discount is applied by your insurer, not the DMV

Deadlines: Give the certificate to your insurer within 90 days of completion to keep the discount retroactive to your completion date (or within 45 days before a renewal)

Court vs Insurance Use

For Court / Tickets

PIRP does not dismiss a ticket or help a pending charge – it only reduces points after a conviction, and it does not lower a Driver Responsibility Assessment.

For Insurance

Mandatory 10% reduction on the base rate of liability and collision premiums for 3 years under NY Insurance Law § 2336.
